7Th Grade Girl'S Poem Goes Viral Asking, 'Why Am I Not Good Enough?'

Who doesn’t remember what was like to be a teenager? Those early years that your body and mind start leaving the carefree stage of childhood and entering the unfamiliar grounds of puberty.

Junior high school, the transition from the calmer years of your life to an unknown territory full of insecurities and self-doubts. When the expectations you have for yourself start becoming much bigger while the peer pressure and competition more intense, and in the midst of all these, YOU try to stay true to yourself and your nature.

Our story today is about a wonderful young girl who, back in 2017, was just entering her teen years, starting her Junior High School experience. She was asked along with her classmates to prepare a poem for the end of the year and what she delivered left everyone in her class, including her teacher, in awe.

Olivia Vella a seventh-grader from Queen Creek Middle School in Arizona asked her peers and teacher while delivering her end-of-year poem for her writing class, “Why am I not good enough?” . Olivia’s poem was so strong and to the point that made everyone in her classroom follow her 6-minutes delivery totally mesmerized.

Olivia in her poem expresses all the insecurities that start to trouble the teen mind once he/ she enters a larger “community” such as the Junior High School. A place where what you wear or with who you socialize actually define you and label you.

In the video posted on YouTube , we can actually hear her telling how stressful every day can be, starting even from the house while preparing for her school day. The stress to pick out the right outfit or the need to wear a specific pair of uncomfortable shoes just because are the trend of the month or season.

This constant struggle to fit in and avoid being the “laughing stock” although at the end you can barely recognize yourself in the mirror. She recites her poem in such a manner that we can discern her strong emotions and fight with her own insecurity. She so genuinely describes the truth of what is really to be an adolescent, “ You look at other girls wishing you were them, but other girls are looking at you wishing they were you” . Nothing seems to be ever enough!

Her poem ends with amazing lines, “But society is wrong. You are loved, you are precious, you are beautiful, you are talented, you are capable, you are deserving of respect, you can eat that meal, you are one in seven billion. And most of all, you are good enough” . She’s can’t be described as anything less than inspirational.

The video went viral on YouTube with more than 16 million viewers and people, among whom many teenagers like Olivia, rushed to voice the opinions. A teenage girl wrote, “The sad part is, even adults can’t write something like this. Only we can relate” , while another wrote, “You could never do this in my school cause you’ll be laughed at and made fun of because you’re ‘too dramatic’ or ‘over-sensitive’, but everything she said is so true and I think it’s amazing how she dared to say this” .

It really seems tough to be a teenager nowadays, but it was never really easy. Each generation had to face their own struggles and insecurities, but it seems that then like now, teens still have to face their own journey to self-discovery but hopefully like Olivia, they would be an inspiration to others.
