Locksmith On High Alert When Customer Answers Door With 911 Written On Her Hand

You never know when you might stumble into a situation where it’s down to you to save somebody from a terrifying ordeal – as one Utah locksmith knows all too well himself.

Greg, who has asked for his last name to not be shared, had been hired to change the lock on the front door of a house in Midway, near Salt Lake City.

After completing his job with no abnormalities, things changed when Greg gave the home’s occupant his invoice.

The woman had “911” written on her hand, Greg noticed, and he thought it might be a sign.

And then, as the woman started talking about what types of payment Greg accepted, it became obvious that the woman was deliberately trying to show him her hand.

Greg recalled to KSTU :

“So obviously, that drew some attention from me. But I was wearing a mask, so I couldn’t mouth anything to her or anything. She’s showing me the ‘911’ again, kind of making sure that I saw it. And I made eye contact with her, to basically let her know that yeah, I saw it.”

He decided to investigate further into the situation inside the house, and noticed there was a man, who “acted suspiciously, staying close to the female and only allowing her to have her phone with his permission,” according to a report from Wasatch County Sheriff’s office.

Greg admitted to CNN that he had been involved in some “domestic situations” in the past.

This is fairly typical for someone in his line of work, who spends a lot of time around families and couples in their own private space.

But Greg said that he’d never seen anything quite like this, and, fearing for the woman’s life, he called a friend who was in the FBI, and then the cops.

When police arrived, they identified the man in question as Grant Eggersten, an ex-boyfriend of the woman in the house.

Grant had entered the woman’s home without permission, according to the report.

He had become jealous that the woman was dating another man, and an argument had ensued. This had resulted in Grant assaulting the woman and barring her from leaving the house or making phone calls.

Thanks to Greg’s quick thinking, Wasatch County Attorney’s Office arrested Grant and charged him with aggravated kidnapping in the course of committing unlawful detention, criminal trespass and assault.

According to the Sheriff’s report, the woman scheduled Greg’s locksmith job before Grant arrived.

She’d been hoping to keep him out of the house for as long as possible, and her plan had worked. Greg said that he hadn’t had to do “any guessing” on his part, because she’d made it obvious that something was going on.

This story thankfully ended well for the woman in question, but if the woman hadn’t been able to communicate with Greg, things could have been very different.

As for Greg, he was just happy that his intervention had helped rescue the woman.

He said:

“When I found out that he had been arrested and charged and stuff, I was kind of like, ‘Okay, good, that’s good.’ I’m glad that the lady is safe and nothing bad happened.”
